11. Art Thou Weary, Art Thou Languid

Art Thou Weary, Art Thou Languid

Translator: John Mason Neale
Tune: STEPHANOS, by Henry W. Baker
(Melody)

1. Art thou weary, art thou languid,
    Art thou sore distrest?
“Come to Me,” saith One, “and coming
    Be at rest!”

2. Hath He marks to lead me to Him,
    If He be my Guide?
“In His Feet and Hands are Wound-prints,
    And His Side.”

3. Hath He diadem as Monarch
    That His Brow adorns?
“Yea, a Crown, in very surety,
    But of thorns.”

4. If I find Him, if I follow,
    What His guerdon here?
“Many a sorrow, many a labour,
    Many a tear.”

5. If I still hold closely to Him,
    What hath He at last?
    “Sorrow vanquish’d, labour ended,
    Jordan past.”

6. If I ask Him to receive me,
    Will He say me nay?
“Not till earth, and not till Heaven
    Pass away.”

7. Finding, following, keeping, struggling,
    Is He sure to bless?
    “Angels, Martyrs, Prophets, Virgins,
    Answer, Yes!”

10. Devotional: Wilderness Communion

Wilderness Communion

by C. H. Spurgeon

I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak comfortably unto her. (Hosea 2:14)

The goodness of God sees us allured by sin, and it resolves to try upon us the more powerful allurements of love. Do we not remember when the Lover of our souls first cast a spell upon us and charmed us away from the fascinations of the world! He will do this again and again whenever He sees us likely to be ensnared by evil.
He promises to draw us apart, for there He can best deal with us, and this separated place is not to be a paradise, but a wilderness, since in such a place there will be nothing to take of our attention from our God. In the deserts of affliction the presence of the Lord becomes everything to us, and we prize His company beyond any value which we set upon it when we sat under our own vine and fig tree in the society of our fellows. Solitude and affliction bring more to themselves and to their heavenly Father than any other means.
When thus allured and secluded the Lord has choice things to say to us for our comfort. He “speaks to our heart,” as the original has it. Oh, that at this we may have this promise explained in our experience! Allured by love, separated by trial, and comforted by the Spirit of truth, may we know the Lord and sing for joy!

9. Devotional: Burdens Cast On Him

Burdens Cast On Him

by C. H. Spurgeon

Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee; he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved. (Psalm 55:22)

It is a heavy burden; roll it on Omnipotence. It is thy burden now, and it crushes thee; but when the Lord takes it, He will make nothing of it. If thou art called still to bear, “he will sustain thee.” It will be on Him and not on thee. Thou wilt be so upheld under it that the burden will be a blessing. Bring the Lord into the matter, and thou wilt stand upright under that which in itself would bow thee down.
Our worst fear is lest our trial should drive us from the path of duty; but this the Lord will never suffer. If we are righteous before Him, He will not endure that our affliction should move us from our standing. In Jesus He accepts us as righteous, and in Jesus He will keep us so.
What about the present moment? Art thou going forth to this day’s trial alone? Are thy poor shoulders again to be galled with the oppressive load? Be not so foolish. Tell the Lord all about thy grief and leave it with Him. Don’t cast your burden down and then take it up again; but roll it on the Lord and leave it there. Then shalt thou walk at large, a joyful and unburdened believer, singing the praises of thy great Burden-Bearer.

8. Devotional: The March Of Time

The March Of Time

by Miles J. Stanford

Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him. (Psalm 37:7)

The difference between knowing the Lord Jesus as Savior and knowing Him as Life, is the better part of a lifetime; even for the hungriest of hearts. “I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 3:14).
“In receiving the Word of God by faith, there is first, light; then exercise of conscience; third, prayer—you are cast on God; fourth, the work of the Spirit to lead you into it.
“Not one of us is beyond the work of the Spirit in us. Many think, because they have the light of a truth that they are in the power and reality of it. No! you may have all the Bible, have much light, but there is no growth beyond the measure of the Spirit’s work in us.”
“Conception of a truth is one thing, and execution is quite another. Grace may have been furnished you with a true conception, but you must wait on the Lord to carry it out by His Spirit. The working out of a true conception is the real discipline.”
“Do not be discouraged because you may not carry out your purpose at once; God will carry it out, but you must keep in the place where you will be preserved, in the circle of His interests.
“Moses had to wait forty years to carry out his purpose, which was a right one, though in the first flush the flesh sought to carry it out; but in the Lord’s time, how fully every purpose of his heart was met—all the way to the Mount of Transfiguration!”

7. Gleaning: Let Us Then...

Let us then think only of the present, and not even permit our minds to wander with curiosity into the future. This future is not yet ours; perhaps it never will be. It is exposing ourselves to temptation to wish to anticipate God, and to prepare ourselves for things which He may not destine for us. If such things should come to pass, He will give us light and strength according to the need. Why should we desire to meet difficulties prematurely, when we have neither strength nor light as yet provided for them? Let us give heed to the present, whose duties are pressing; it is fidelity to the present which prepares us for fidelity in the future. - Fenelon

If day by day we first seek divine direction, and then follow it, we shall be ready, when new circumstances arise, for the new blessings which will be offered. Today should be preparation for tomorrow. The only proof that we shall be equal to tomorrow’s test is that we are meeting today’s test believingly and courageously. The only evidence that we shall be willing for God’s will tomorrow is that we are subject to His will today. - W. G. S.

2. Hymn: Now Shall My Inward Joys Arise

Now Shall My Inward Joys Arise

Author: Issac Watts
Tune: AFRICA, by William Billings

1. Now shall my inward joys arise,
    And burst into a song;
    Almighty love inspires my heart,
    And pleasure tunes my tongue.

2. God on his thirsty Zion hill
    Some mercy drops has thrown,
And solemn oaths have bound his love
    To shower salvation down.

3. Why do we then indulge our fears,
    Suspicions, and complaints?
Is he a God, and shall his grace
    Grow weary of his saints?

4. Can a kind woman e'er forget
    The infant of her womb?
And 'mongst a thousand tender thoughts
    Her suckling have no room?

5. "Yet," saith the Lord, "should nature change,
    And mothers monsters prove,
Zion still dwells upon the heart
    Of everlasting love.

6. "Deep on the palms of both my hands
    I have engraved her name;
My hands shall raise her ruined walls,
    And build her broken frame?"

1. Devotional: Have Faith In God

Have Faith In God

by F. B. Meyer

Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the master any further? (Mark 5:35)

What hopelessness! They had watched the sweet flower fade, till no color was left on the pale cheek, and the merry voice was still; and then they thought of the Galilean Teacher: "Why cost Him time and trouble? His visit will be useless now! It was very kind of Him to be willing to come! But it is now of no use! Very kind; but no use."
We go to God in comparatively small trials, and think He can help us. But there are times when we say: It is no use troubling further; we must just bear our trial as well as we can, God Himself cannot help us. Can He give back that twin-soul? Can He restore the love that has died out? Can He undo this unhappy marriage? Can He deliver from that lifelong paralysis? Life is extinct; hope is dead; the light has dipped below the horizon. It is no use to trouble God or man. We have no alternative but to suffer till eternity explain the mysteries of time.
But Jesus knows the way out. He says in His sweet undertone, "Fear not! only believe." He has the keys of death. He never would have let things come to this awful pass by His delay unless He had known that, even if the worse came to the worst, all would end well. He has purposely delayed till this, that He might have the better opportunity of showing you what God can do. Fear not! the hand of the Almighty Saviour has yours within its grasp. He will not let you stumble as you go down this dark staircase by His side. Only believe: have faith in Him. All may seem very mysterious now, but you will come to see that it was the wisest and best after all. You shall yet clasp to your heart the lost one, arrayed in resurrection beauty.
