13. Devotional: Why Are Ye Troubled?

Devotional: Why Are Ye Troubled?
Author: James Smith (1802-1862)

Why are ye troubled? (Luke 24:38)

    TO THE FEARFUL DISCIPLES, THE RISEN LORD SAID, “PEACE BE UNTO YOU.” To us today, He says the same. Why should you be troubled? Consider what Jesus has done for you, promised to you, and is gone to prepare for you. Consider what He is to you, your loving Bridegroom, faithful Friend, and gracious Saviour. What troubles you? Is it sin? He will pardon, subdue, and cleanse it. The world? He has overcome it, redeemed you from it, and is leading you through it. Is Satan the problem? He is conquered, condemned, and will soon be imprisoned. The cares and troubles of life? Jesus says, "Bring them to me by prayer, cast them on me in faith, leave them with me; I know what you want, I have provided of my goodness, I will supply all your needs; your bread shall be given you, and your water shall be sure. I will make a way in the wilderness of trouble, and a path in the desert of perplexity. Let not your hearts be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. Try me, trust me, in all your ways acknowledge me, and I will direct your paths. I have wisdom, power, and love; and all that I have is yours, to be employed for your good." Commit your way unto the Lord, trust also in Him, and He will bring it to pass.

Yield to the Lord, with simple heart,
All that thou hast, and all thou art;
Renounce all strength, but strength divine,
And peace shall be for ever thine;
Behold the path the saints have trod,
The path which led them home to God.

12. Devotional: And She Went to Inquire of the Lord

Devotional: And She Went to Inquire of the Lord
Author: James Smith (1802-1862)

And she went to inquire of the Lord. (Genesis 25:22)

    “IN EVERYTHING BY PRAYER AND SUPPLICATION.” Why worry when we can pray? Rebekah prayed. Let us imitate Rebekah, for God commands us to do so. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths. Commit thy way unto the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass. Are you in trouble? Go, and inquire of the Lord: What is the cause? Unite with holy Job in praying, "Show me wherefore Thou contendest with me." Are you in perplexity? Go and inquire: What is the meaning? He will instruct thee and teach thee in the way thou shouldest go; He will guide thee with His eye. Go in an inquiring spirit. Go, persuaded whatever thy circumstances or trials may be, that, as a believer in Jesus, wrath and curse can have nothing to do with thee; they were lifted when Jesus died in thy stead. Be assured that whatever comes from God is a blessing, a benefit, a favour, a proof of love, however painful, perplexing, or distressing it may be. Do not reason, but believe in the promise of thy God; do not despair, grieve, or complain; but go, and inquire of the Lord at His throne, of His word. He says, "I will be inquired of."

Prayer was appointed to convey
The blessings God designs to give;
Long as they live should Christians pray,
For only while they pray they live.

11. Devotional: He Cannot Deny Himself

Devotional: He Cannot Deny Himself
Author: James Smith (1802-1862)

He cannot deny Himself. (2 Timothy 2:13)

    GOD HAS OPENED HIS HEART TO US IN HIS WORD. He has told us all His mind: He means every word He has spoken, and will fulfill every promise He has made. He cannot deny Himself or falsify His word; He can have no temptation to do so. Man may be fickle, he is but a bruised reed; Jehovah is always the same, He is the Rock of Ages. He will have compassion on the miserable who seek His face and show mercy to all who plead with Him in Jesus' name. He will not cast out a repentant sinner, or refuse to receive a confessing backslider. He cannot turn a deaf ear to our cries, or refuse to deliver us when we call on His name. He will take His own time, but will never dishonour His faithful word. He will be rigidly faithful, both to His threatenings and promises. Let us take courage and trust in Him; we have His word, it is true, from the beginning; we have this assurance, that He cannot deny Himself. Let us then stay ourselves on the word of our God; let us trust Him though the night be dark and the burden be heavy. He exhorts, "Trust ye in Jehovah for ever, for in Him there is everlasting strength."

Engraved as onto solid rock
The mighty promise shines;
Nor can the powers of darkness mock
Those everlasting lines.

10. Devotional: He Will Save

Devotional: He Will Save
Author: James Smith (1802-1862)

He will save. (Zephaniah 3:17)

    THE LORD THY GOD IS MIGHTY TO SAVE. Whom will He save? The lost, the wretched, the unworthy. Every applicant, for "whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." Our Lord says, "Him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out." How? Freely, without money and without price; fully, by His blood, power, and providence; eternally, all who flee to Him for refuge, all who call on Him for pardon, peace, and life, shall be saved with an everlasting salvation; they shall not be ashamed or confounded, Why? Because it is His Father's will; because He delighteth in mercy; because it will eternally glorify His name. From what? From sin, its guilt, filth, and power; from the present evil world; from Satan; from the wrath of God; from every evil work; and from all the evil designs of men. He has saved us by showing us grace and dying in our stead. He does save us by His presence, word, providence, and the renewing of the Holy Spirit. He will save in every trouble, from every foe, even unto the end. Look to Him then, and to Him alone, to deliver, direct, relieve, and preserve. He says, "Look unto me, and be ye saved, all ye ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other."

Why should I doubt His love at last,
With anxious thoughts perplexed?
He who saved me in troubles past,
Will save me in the next.

9. Devotional: Lord, Increase Our Faith

Devotional: Lord, Increase Our Faith
Author: James Smith (1802-1862)

Lord, increase our faith. (Luke 17:5)

    SOLA FIDE! FAITH ALONE SAVES, FAITH IN CHRIST ALONE! The believer is as his faith. If faith is weak, he is fearful, fretful, and troubled; if faith is strong and rightly placed, he is courageous, active, and happy. Faith comes from Jesus, He is its author; it leads to Jesus, He is its object. Faith is like a grain of mustard seed, it grows and increases; Jesus alone can increase our faith. Let us apply to Him this morning, and let this be our prayer, "Lord, increase my faith." Strong faith will believe without feeling, yea, against feelings and appearances. It will trust God where it cannot trace Him; it assures the soul that what He has promised He is able to perform, and will assuredly do so. Great faith will have great trials, for God never gives faith without trying it; and the heat of the furnace is in proportion to the strength of our faith. Little faith lays hold on Christ, and brings salvation; strong faith receives much and often from Christ and brings great consolation. Go to Jesus with the faith thou hast, and plead with Him for the faith He requires. He gives freely to every importunate pleader; and He will assuredly give to thee.

O Jesus, now Thyself impart
And fix Thy presence in my heart;
Give strong and living faith!
Then will I throw off every load,
And walk delightfully with God,
Believing all He saith.

8. Devotional: Peace, Peace

Devotional: Peace, Peace
Author: James Smith (1802-1862)

Peace, peace. Isaiah (57:19)

    SUCH ARE THE GOSPEL’S SOOTHING SOUNDS WHISPERED IN THE BELIEVER'S EAR. In times of tribulation, in times of temptation, in times of bodily disease and suffering, it softly cries "Peace, peace." Peace, for Jesus died to put away your sins. Peace, for Jesus lives to intercede for you in heaven. Peace, for Jesus reigns, and your concerns are in His hands. Peace, for Jesus loves, and His love is immutably fixed on you. Peace, for God is love. Peace, for you are reconciled to Him by the death of His Son. Let not your heart be troubled. Every thought of God respecting you, is peaceful. Every purpose of God toward you which providence has to work out, is peaceful. Heaven is at peace with you. You are also at peace with heaven. Your peace was made when Jesus died in your stead; when He put away your sin by the sacrifice of Himself. Look to Him as your peacemaker. Live in the atmosphere of Gethsemane and Golgotha. Often meditate upon that precious verse, "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee; because he trusteth in Thee." Let your mind rest in the Lord always. He is the God of peace.

Jesus, my feeble faith increase,
And sweetly multiply my peace;
Because I fully trust Thy power,
My sin shall trouble me no more.

7. Devotional: Wait In Anticipation

Devotional: Wait In Anticipation
Author: Basilea Schlink (1904-2001)

    You think you can no longer bear the burden that has been placed upon you. But listen! The Father wants to comfort you as His child: The dark valley is almost over. Soon bright beams of joy and bliss will be waiting for you. You will laugh as much as you have cried. "Blessed are you that weep now, for you shall laugh." Live in expectation of the hour when your weeping will turn to laughter. This hour will come and in all eternity your laughter will never cease. This hour will come while you are still on earth—and perhaps it will be tomorrow. Wait in anticipation! (Luke 6:21)

6. Devotional: I Wait for the Lord

Devotional: I Wait for the Lord
Author: James Smith (1802-1862)

I wait for the Lord. (Ps. 130:5)

    THIS is a blessed posture, but it is often a trying one. Every Christian has to wait, and waiting is for his good. "It is good that a man should both hope, and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord." We are kept waiting to try us—are we sincere? Are we in earnest? Do we value the blessing? To stir us up; we are apt to become formal, to settle on our lees, to sink into lukewarmness. Then comes a trial, this sends us to the Lord. He does not appear. We go again. We get no answer. We must wait. This rouses our energies, reproves our folly, and makes us more decided and determined. It is to teach us our dependence. We are apt to forget, or lose sight of this. We sink into self. We get conceited, or vain. Then comes something which shows us that we cannot do without the Lord. We go to him. He seems to turn a deaf ear to us. We go again. We must wait. This humbles us, and brings us into our proper place. Beloved, is there any particular blessing which you need? Have you asked it of God? Does he delay to give it? Wait for him. He will appear. His time is the best. Wait patiently.

For God, I look; with strong desires,
To God my ardent soul aspires;
And hope, still waiting for the Lord,
Rests on the promise of his word.

5. Devotional: The Lord Is My Shepherd

Devotional: The Lord Is My Shepherd
Author: James Smith (1802-1862)

The Lord is my Shepherd. (Psalm 23:1)

    DAVID WAS ONE OF HIS SHEEP. All His sheep know Him, love Him, and follow Him. They possess His disposition; He was meek and lowly in heart. Are you a sheep of Christ? Are you looking to your Shepherd, following and rejoicing in Him? If so, it is His delight to lead you, feed you, protect you, and heal you. Your person, life, health, comforts, and safety, are committed to His care. He is the good Shepherd, He laid down His life for His sheep; He searches and seeks out His sheep wherever they have been scattered; He feeds His flock; He gathers the lambs with His arm and carries them in His bosom. He loves His sheep more than His own life; He cares for His sheep more than for all the world beside. He feeds them in the best green pasture, and leads them in paths of righteousness for His name's sake. O view Jesus as your Shepherd! Expect Him to lead you, feed you, fold you, and one day, soon, to present you to His Father with exceeding joy. Cleave to Him; let nothing tempt you to leave His feet, His flock, or His fold. He will never leave you, nor forsake you, just because you are His.

Jehovah is my Shepherd's name!
With Him no foe can make me fear;
The Shepherd’s voice each day I hear,
My filial love He has a claim;
In every danger He is nigh,
He does my every want supply.

4. Devotional: It Is I; Be Not Afraid

Devotional: It Is I; Be Not Afraid
Author: James Smith (1802-1862)

It is I; be not afraid. (John 6:20)

    THE FEARS OF THE CHRISTIAN DISHONOUR HIS LORD. Fear is a denial of his faith, and a fruitful source of distress to his soul. All things are of God, He worketh all things after the counsel of His own will, and in every event He says to us, "It is I, be not afraid." If friends turn to foes and distress us, if death visits our dwellings and bereaves us, if sickness lays us aside and fills us with pain, He says, "It is I; be not afraid." If losses, crosses, and sore trials come upon us, and discourage, distress, and perplex us, He says, "It is I; be not afraid." If death approaches, and calls upon us to leave the body and close our eyes upon our beloved relations, friends, and connexions, He says, "It is I; be not afraid." Should we hear the pillars of heaven crack, and feel the strong foundation of the earth give way; should the heavens be rolled up like a scroll, and the great white throne appear; still, amidst the wreck of matter and the crash of worlds, He cries, "Be not afraid; it is I." Happy Christian! thy fears are groundless and thy brightest hopes well founded. Rejoice in Jesus!

O that I might so believe,
Steadfastly to Jesus cleave;
Only on His love rely,
Smile at the destroyer nigh:
Free from care and servile fear,
Feel the Saviour always near.

3. Devotional: The Obedience of Faith

Devotional: The Obedience of Faith
Author: James Smith (1802-1862)

The obedience of faith. (Romans 16:26)

    THE OBEDIENCE REQUIRED OF FAITH IS SUBMISSION TO GOD’S WILL. It is the submission of the intellect, the heart, and the life to God. The law of faith is the gospel: this requires us to believe that "God is love," that Christ died in the place of sinners; to embrace mercy as freely presented, and receive forgiveness as the gift of God; to accept of the righteousness of Jesus, to trust in it alone for acceptance before God, and to plead it at the throne of grace for all we need; to come daily to Jesus for all we want, and to expect to receive at His hands all He has promised; to live for God, to live to God, to live like God. It requires us, in one word, so to live that God may be all, and man nothing. God requires the obedience of a believing heart. We must believe what He says, expect what He has promised, and do what He bids. This is the life of faith and Satan will oppose it. The carnal mind will throw a thousand obstacles in the way. Everything that is of a worldly character will hinder us. But we must wrestle, strive, break through, and say, "I will believe my God. I will obey my Lord." That only is the way of faith.

Spirit of faith, unfold Thy law,
Thy quick'ning pow’r impart:
My soul to sweet obedience draw,
Fill and control my heart.

2. Devotional: Neither Be Ye of A Doubtful Mind

Devotional: Neither Be Ye of A Doubtful Mind
Author: James Smith (1802-1862)

Neither be ye of a doubtful mind. (Luke 12:29)

    We are all prone to doubt, and to doubt that most, which there is no reason at all to doubt. But some seem to nurse their doubts, as though doubting was a part of religion. This is wrong. It is sinful. Our Lord often bids us believe, but he never encourages doubts. Doubting dishonors him, distresses us, and gives Satan an advantage over us. Let us not doubt his providence, for it is kind; nor his word, for it is true. Let us not judge by appearances, which often mislead; but let us rest on divine promises, which can never change or deceive. Let us not look too much at ourselves, our abilities, or our circumstances; but let us look to the Lord, to his wisdom, power, and love. Not tremble at poverty, because God can make us happier in poverty, than we ever have been in plenty.

    Let us not be affected by the changeableness of men, for our God is in one mind and none can turn him. If we yield to a doubtful mind, it will spoil our present comforts, hinder us in holy duties, dim the eye of our hope, and feed and nourish our fears. But what is worse than all, it will reflect upon the kindness, care, and providence of our gracious God.

Cast thy burdens on the Lord,
Leave them with thy Savior;
He (whose hands for thee were bored)
Can and will deliver:
He is true and faithful still,
Yield thyself unto his will.

1. Devotional: I Shall Not Want

Devotional: I Shall Not Want
Author: James Smith (1802-1862)

I shall not want. (Psalm 23:1)

    THIS WAS DAVID'S CONCLUSION BECAUSE THE LORD WAS HIS SHEPHERD. If we are His sheep He will supply us. He has all things in His possession: the silver and the gold, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. His owner’s mark is upon all. All spiritual blessings are in His possession also; and He has a kind, tender, and liberal heart. He will give the best and liberally. He has undertaken to supply, conduct, protect, and present His flock upon Mount Zion. He has promised to be to us, to do for us, and to bestow upon us, all that our circumstances require. His care of His flock in times past is our sufficient assurance for the future. Whenever were the righteous forsaken, or His sheep left neglected? Did David ever want? Few men ever passed through greater or severer trials; yet upon his dying bed he tells us, he had all his desire fulfilled in the Lord. If you belong to Christ, you too may safely conclude, "I shall not want." Your fears are follies; your anxieties are groundless; your forebodings are sinful; you have a faithful God to provide for you, and you ought to rejoice. "My God," says the apostle, "shall supply all your needs, according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus."

What want shall not our God supply
From His abundant stores?
What showers of blessing from on high
Each day th’ Almighty pours!

22. Devotional: I Will Be with Him in Trouble

Devotional: I Will Be with Him in Trouble
Author: James Smith (1802-1862)

I will be with him in trouble. (Ps. 91:15)

    Sin is the parent of trouble; all sorrow originated in departing from God. It is generally occasioned by transgression, or sent as a preventative to a greater evil; it may be occasioned by good, for saints are sometimes persecuted for righteousness' sake. It is intended to correct, improve, and to bring us near to God. Whatever may be our trouble, if we are the Lord's, He is with us; and with us for the most gracious purposes. He fixes the period of our troubles, nor can they continue longer than He sees needful. He regulates the heat of the furnace, nor will He suffer us to be tried more than we are able to bear. He sanctifies our troubles, and causes them to work our good. He delivers out of trouble, when the purposes of His love are accomplished. In every trouble, remember, God is now especially present; He is with you to hear your prayer, increase your strength, direct your way, and make you a conqueror. His grace is sufficient; His presence is sure; your deliverance in His time and way is certain. Therefore, "wait on the Lord, be of good courage; He will strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the Lord."

He that hath made his refuge God,
Shall find a most secure abode;
Shall walk all day beneath His shade,
And there at night shall rest his head.

    My highest good and my unending need

2. O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer
    Strong defender of my weary heart
    My sword to fight the cruel deceiver
    And my shield against his hateful darts
    My song when enemies surround me
    My hope when tides of sorrow rise
    My joy when trials are abounding
    Your faithfulness, my refuge in the night

3. O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer
    Gracious Savior of my ruined life
    My guilt and cross laid on Your shoulders
    In my place You suffered bled and died

    May all my days bring glory to Your Name

20. Devotional: A Promise for Difficult Times

Devotional: A Promise for Difficult Times
Author: David Wilkerson (1931-2011)

    I believe God has given us a very specific promise for the difficult times ahead. It was given to Abraham and his seed as an oath. "The oath which he swore to our father Abraham: To grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life" (Luke 1:73-75, NKJV).

    God has sworn to deliver us from every enemy and fearful thing so we can serve him all the days of our lives without fear. Beloved, hunger is an enemy, as are nakedness and poverty.

    This oath from God must be the foundation of our trust in every crisis, calamity and fearful time. Memorize it. Let it be your holy argument at the throne of grace.

    In Psalm 121, David provides one of the most powerful Holy Ghost arguments ever given to man. The entire psalm tells us that all our help comes from the Lord alone. Psalm 124 is yet another holy argument, a specific promise to enable us to build special trust.

    Signature judgments bear a special mark of God in that they mirror the sins committed against him. As these judgments occur before our eyes, our only answer is to have Jesus as our shield.

    Today, run to meet him in the secret closet of prayer. Let your roots go deep into him; know he will keep you in all circumstances. Take hold of the following special promises in readiness for any and all calamities we may face.

    "Unto the upright there arises light in the darkness… His heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord. His heart is established; he will not be afraid" (Psalm 112:4, 7-8).

    "He shall judge the world in righteousness… The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. And those who know your name will put their trust in you; for you, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you" (Psalm 9:8-10).

19. Hymn: O Lord, How Happy Should We Be

Hymn: O Lord, How Happy Should We Be
Author: Joseph Anstice (1808-1836)

1. O Lord, how happy should we be
    If we could cast our care on Thee,
    If we from self could rest,
    And feel at heart that One above,
    In perfect wisdom, perfect love,
    Is working for the best!

2. How far from this our daily life,
    Ever disturbed by anxious strife,
    By sudden, wild alarms!
    O could, we but relinquish all
    Our earthly props, and simply fall
    On Thy almighty arms!

3. Could we but kneel and cast our load,
    E'en while we pray, upon our God,
    Then rise with lightened cheer,
    Sure that the Father, who is nigh
    To still the famished raven's cry,
    Will hear in that we fear!

4. Lord, make these faithless hearts of ours
    Such lesson learns from birds and flowers;
    Make them from self to cease,
    Leave all things to a Father's will,
    And taste, before Him lying still,
    E'en in affliction, peace.

18. Devotional: Pray and Persevere

Devotional: Pray and Persevere
Author: David Wilkerson (1931-2011)

    God wants to ensure your heart is set on persevering, no matter how long his answers to prayer take.

    Jesus gave us a parable to prove that he waits for us to persevere. It is the parable of the distressed widow who kept coming to the judge and requesting justice (see Luke 18:2-8). The judge finally granted the widow’s request only because he did not want to be worn down by her constant pleading. "Yet because this widow troubles me I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me" (Luke 18:5, NKJV). Jesus responded, "Hear what the unjust judge said. And shall God not avenge his own elect who cry out day and night to him, though he bears long with them? I tell you that he will avenge them speedily" (Luke 18:7-8).

    Most of us misinterpret this passage as Jesus speaking a paradox when he says, "bears long with them" and then "he will avenge them speedily." However, Jesus isn’t speaking of delaying a long time. He says God wants to answer us speedily, but God is "bearing something" that calls for patience on his part. He says, "I will put up with this thing I see in your heart. I will bear with you until you are willing to lay hold as you should for the answer."

    As I look back at some of the things I have persevered in prayer for, I see the Lord saying, "I'm holding up the request to you like a mirror. Through this, I will show you what is deep in your heart."

    I have seen doubt, fear, unbelief, and many things that have made me throw myself at Jesus’s feet and cry, "Oh, Lord, I’m not interested in the answers anymore, but only in getting this spirit out of me. I don’t want to doubt you."

    The hardest part of faith is the last half hour. When it seems God will not answer, we often give up and go on to something else. We think we are surrendering to God’s providence, depending on his sovereign will. We say, "Well, God, you must not have wanted it after all."

    No! That is not what God intended. When praying for God’s obvious will, such as the salvation of your family, you have every right to hold on and persevere. Never give up until Jesus answers.

17. Modern Worship Song: Still, My Soul Be Still

Modern Worship Song: Still, My Soul Be Still
Author: Keith Getty, Kristyn Getty & Stuart Townend

1. Still, my soul, be still, and do not fear
    Though winds of change may rage tomorrow.
    God is at your side no longer dread
    The fires of unexpected sorrow.

Chorus:
God, You are my God
And I will trust in You and not be shaken.
Lord of peace, renew
A steadfast spirit within me
To rest in You alone.

2. Still, my soul, be still do not be moved
    By lesser lights and fleeting shadows.
    Hold on to His ways with shield of faith,
    Against temptation's flaming arrows.

3. Still, my soul, be still, do not forsake
    The truth you learned in the beginning.
    Wait upon the Lord and hope will rise
    As stars appear when day is dimming.

16. Devotional: In God’s Time

Devotional: In God’s Time
Author: David Wilkerson (1931-2011)

    Many years ago, while walking the streets of New York City, I became worn out, tired in soul and body. I developed mononucleosis and ended up in the hospital for six weeks and developed a growth in my throat. I could not swallow, and sometimes I couldn’t even catch my breath. My weight soon fell to less than 115 pounds. Since I could not travel, all the income to the ministry quickly dried up, and it looked like the end of Teen Challenge.

    I remember the night I cried out in desperation, "Lord, I give up! Teen Challenge is all yours. I am just going to trust you. If you want the ministry’s doors to close, that is up to you; but please, remove this thing from my throat." Within an hour, I coughed up a fleshy growth the size of a large walnut.

    I left the hospital a day or two later and soon got my strength back. I discovered that while I was away, Teen Challenge had survived! I do not know how the Lord did it, but while I was ill, the staff began to trust the Lord instead of depending on me. That is what God was trying to accomplish.

    Beloved, your troubles are not unforeseen accidents. No matter what you are going through or how deeply you are hurt, God is right on target and right on time.

    You may think the devil came in and interrupted God’s plan for your life, but that is not the case. It does not matter if you did something stupid or careless. If you have repented, the Lord can harness everything meant for evil and turn it around for good.

    Don’t focus on your past mistakes. God promised to restore to you all the years the cankerworm has eaten (see Joel 2:25).  Encourage yourself with these words and let them become your life and hope: "My God can do anything. He has not forgotten me. No one can change his plans. No matter how bad things look, he has everything under control!"

15. Devotional: Go in Peace

Devotional: Go in Peace
Author: James Smith (1802-1862)

Go in peace. (Luke 7:50)

    True peace flows from the pardon of sin. If we believe that God for Christ's sake has forgiven us all trespasses, our souls will enjoy peace; for being justified by faith, we have peace with God. We have nothing to fear from God, for having pardoned us, he has no charge against us; but we may expect every good thing from God, for having given us his Son, will he not with him also freely give us all things? If therefore we have no evil to fear, but every good to expect, may we not, ought we not, to be at peace? When Jesus pardoned the woman, he said to her "go in peace." So he says to us. Mind not what Satan says. Fear not what man can do. Go in the path of duty. Go, and face trials and persecutions. Go, and enjoy your temporal mercies. Go, and enjoy your religious privileges. Go, though dangers surround you. Go, though you feel weak and feeble. Go in peace, for God accepts you. Go, for your reconciliation to God is honourable and perfect. Go, and spread a Saviour's fame. Go, and tell of Jehovah's pardoning love. Go, and bear your personal testimony to the truth of his word. Go, and conquer all your foes. Go, ths night to rest in peace, and comfort your soul with this: "God is at peace with me."

O Lamb of God, in tender love,
Now bid my sorrow cease;
Kindly my doubts and fears remove,
And bid ME, "Go in peace."

14. Hymn: 'Tis I! Be Not Afraid!

Hymn: 'Tis I! Be Not Afraid!
Author: Elizabeth R. Charles (1828-1896)

Tossed with rough winds, and faint with fear,
Above the tempest, soft and clear,
What still small accents greet mine ear?
“‘Tis I; be not afraid.”

“‘Tis I who led thy steps aright;
‘Tis I who gave thy blind eyes sight;
‘Tis I, thy Lord, thy Life, thy Light.
‘Tis I; be not afraid.

“This bitter cup fear not to drink;
I know it well—oh! do not shrink;
I tasted it o’er Kedron’s brink.
‘Tis I; be not afraid.

“Mine eyes are watching by thy bed,
Mine arms are underneath thy head,
My blessing is around thee shed.
‘Tis I; be not afraid.“

When on the other side thy feet
Shall rest ‘mid thousands welcomes sweet,
One well known voice thy heart shall greet.
“‘Tis I; be not afraid.”

From out the dazzling majesty
Gently He’ll lay His hands on thee,
Whispering: “Beloved, lov’st thou Me?
It was not in vain I died for thee,
‘Tis I; be not afraid.”

12. Hymn: When I Saw the Cleansing Fountain

Hymn: When I Saw the Cleansing Fountain
Author: Margaret J. Harris (1865-1919)

1. When I saw the cleansing fountain,
    Open wide for all my sin,
    I obeyed the Spirit’s wooing,
    When He said, “Wilt thou be clean?”

Refrain:
I will praise Him! I will praise Him!
Praise the Lamb for sinners slain;
Give Him glory, all ye people,
For His blood can wash away each stain.

2. Tho‵ the way seems straight and narrow,
    All I claimed was swept away;
    My ambitions, plans and wishes,
    At my feet in ashes lay.

3. Then God’s fire upon the altar
    Of my heart was set aflame;
    I shall never cease to praise Him,
    Glory, glory to His name!

4. Blessed be the name of Jesus!
    I’m so glad He took me in;
    He’s forgiven my transgressions,
    He has cleansed my heart from sin.

5. Glory, glory to the Father!
    Glory, glory to the Son!
    Glory, glory to the Spirit!
    Glory to the Three in One!

10. Hymn: Leave All to God

Hymn: Leave All to God
Author: Anton Ulrich (1633-1714)

Leave all to God,
Forsaken one, and stay thy tears;
For the Highest knows thy pain,
Sees thy sufferings and thy fears
Thou shalt not wait His help in vain,
Leave all to God.

Be still and trust!
For His strokes are strokes of love,
Thou must for thy profit bear;
He thy filial fear would move,
Trust thy Father's loving care,
Be still and trust!

Know, God is near!
Though thou think Him far away,
Though His mercy long have slept,
He will come and not delay,
When His child enough hath wept,
For God is near!

O teach Him not
When and how to hear thy prayers;
Never doth our God forget,
He the cross who longest bears
Finds his sorrows' bounds are set,
Then teach Him not.

If thou love Him,
Walking truly in His ways,
Then no trouble, cross or death,
E'er shall silence faith and praise;
All things serve thee here beneath,
If thou love God!

9. Devotional: Fear Not, Neither Be Discouraged

Devotional: Fear Not, Neither Be Discouraged
Author: James Smith (1802-1862)

Fear not, neither be discouraged. (Deuteronomy 1:21)

    “BEHOLD THE LORD THY GOD HATH SET THE LAND BEFORE THEE.” The land of promise was in sight. “Go in and possess the land.” Though the Lord tries us, He also encourages us. More than fifty times, he says to us in His word, "Fear not." Yet we are often fearful. He knew this would be the case, therefore He provided so much to cheer and encourage us. Let us not be discouraged for the Lord has set the good land before us; He has promised it to us, He bids us go up and take possession of it. Our enemies may be mighty, but our God who goes with us and fights for us, is almighty. Our foes may be crafty, but on our side is "the only wise God." If providence should frown, if the Lord delays to answer our prayers, if our case should appear to be desperate, it is only to exercise our patience, try our faith, to stir us to importunate prayer. Let us therefore press on in hope and persevere in faith. The Lord will appear for us. His faithful word shall be made good in our experience; and though now He may not answer us a word, He will soon give us the desire of our hearts. Only fear not, neither be discouraged: our God is with us.

Armed with the presence of my Lord
I would be of good cheer;
Confiding in His faithful word,
Why should I faint or fear?
Though fierce the foe, though rough the road,
I can do all through Christ my God.

8. Devotional: But He Answered Her Not A Word

Devotional: But He Answered Her Not A Word
Author: James Smith (1802-1862)

But He answered her not a word. (Matthew 15:23)

    “O WOMAN, GREAT IS THY FAITH.” Our Lord commended her for her faith. Delays are not denials. Jesus delayed to answer, but He did not deny her request. He has said, "Ask, and it shall be given you. Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, He will give it you." Heaven and earth may pass away, but His word stands forever. He delays the answer to try our faith, patience and perseverance; but when He sends the blessing, He proves His faithfulness, pity and love. Be not discouraged though your prayers remain unanswered for a time; it will not always be so. This poor woman had to wait, though her case was very trying, and her request very urgent; but at last Jesus commended her faith publicly, and dismissed her, saying, "Be it unto thee even as thou wilt." Prayer will prevail, if it is the prayer of faith. Pray on, then, and do not faint. Say as Jacob on the plains of Peniel, "I will not let Thee go, except Thou bless me." Plead with Him; be importunate; wait His time; be willing to receive in His own way; be concerned that He should be glorified in giving to you, or doing for you; then you cannot fail. His mercy is from everlasting to everlasting, upon them that fear Him. Only be patient: today He may answer not a word. But our God never forgets His own.

Wait for His seasonable aid,
And, though it tarry, wait;
The promise may be long delayed,
But cannot come too late.

7. Modern Worship Song: He (Can Turn The Tides)

Modern Worship Song: He (Can Turn The Tides)
Author: Jack Richards

He can turn the tides and calm the angry sea
He alone decides who writes a symphony
He lights every star that makes our darkness bright
He keeps watch all through each long and lonely night
He still finds the time to hear a child’s first prayer
Saint or sinner call will always find Him there
Though it makes Him sad to see the way we live
He’ll always say, “I forgive”.

He can grant a wish and make a dream come true
He can touch the clouds and turn the grey to blue
He alone knows where to find the rainbow’s end
He alone can know what lies beyond the bend
He can touch a tree and turn the leaves to gold
He knows every lie that you and I have told
Though it makes Him sad to see the way we live
He’ll always say, “I forgive”.

5. Hymn: I Know Whom I Have Believed

Hymn: I Know Whom I Have Believed
Author: Daniel W. Whittle (1840-1901)

1. I know not why God’s wondrous grace
    To me He hath made known,
    Nor why, unworthy, Christ in love
    Redeemed me for His own.

Refrain:
But “I know Whom I have believed,
And am persuaded that He is able
To keep that which I’ve committed
Unto Him against that day.”

2. I know not how this saving faith
    To me He did impart,
    Nor how believing in His Word
    Wrought peace within my heart.

3. I know not how the Spirit moves,
    Convincing men of sin,
    Revealing Jesus through the Word,
    Creating faith in Him.

4. I know not when my Lord may come,
    At night or noonday fair,
    Nor if I walk the vale with Him,
    Or meet Him in the air.

3. Devotional: The Strength of Israel Will Not Lie

Devotional: The Strength of Israel Will Not Lie
Author: James Smith (1802-1862)

The Strength of Israel will not lie. (1 Samuel 15:29)

    OUR GOD KEEPETH TRUTH FOR EVER. And He changeth not. Then He ought to be believed. It is impossible for God to lie, then He ought to be trusted. His promises are the proofs of His love; they are as changeless as His nature: in time, they shall be made good. He is the Omnipotent One who can fulfill His word; He is the Unchangeable One, who certainly will. His strength is pledged to His people, to sustain them; His resources, to supply them; and His faithfulness, to comfort them. He speaks to us in His word; He speaks to us as sinners; He speaks to us as fearful, as tried, as suffering people, just as we are tonight. Do we believe His word? Do we regard Him as a truth-speaking God? Has He our confidence? Are we looking at His promises, and while we look, do we say, "This is the faithful word of the heavenly Father, and is certainly true.” God’s word must be fulfilled, for it is more enduring than heaven or earth, for Jesus has said, “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away!” Fix your eyes on His word, and while you do, say,

Yes, since God Himself pronounced it,
On His promise I rely;
He has said it, I believe it;
What can mortal man deny?
God inerrant cannot err,
He is truth, His word is sure.

2. Devotional: Only Believe

Devotional: Only Believe
Author: James Smith (1802-1862)

Only believe. (Mark 5:36)

    OUR GOD IS FAITHFUL AND TRUE. He is worthy of our complete confidence and trust. In faith, let us take God at His word. Give Him credit for meaning what He says, for being faithful to His own word; then all your fears will fly away. God speaks to you in language which you can understand; He promises all you can possibly need; He bids you put Him in remembrance, and plead with Him; He pledges His word for the comfort of your heart. If you believe not, you make God a liar; you bring darkness on your own soul; you give Satan an occasion against you; and a thousand fears, doubts, and suspicions distress you. Is it any wonder? Can you offer a greater insult to God than deliberately to disbelieve His word? But you ask, Are the promises made to me? Yes! to every one that believeth, and to you if you believe. And the Spirit is promised to work faith in your heart; complain not then of the difficulty of believing, or of the power of unbelief; but go to thy God, and plead with Him, crying, "Lord, increase my faith," and go to His word, as to the word of a gracious Father, and simply believe it.

1. Devotional: Perplexity

Devotional: Perplexity
Author: Unknown

Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which He hath made crooked? (Eccles 7:13)

    Often God seems to place His children in positions of profound difficulty, leading them into a wedge from which there is no escape, contriving a situation which no human judgment would have permitted, had it been consulted previously. The Lord Himself conducts them there. You may be thus involved this very hour.

    It does seem perplexing and very serious to the last degree, but it is perfectly right. The issue will more than justify Him who has brought you into the situation. It is a platform for the display of His mighty power and grace.

    He will not only deliver you, but in doing so He will give you a lesson that you will never forget, and which you will remember later with thanksgiving and praise. You will never be able to thank God enough for having done just as He has.

    Call upon Me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify Me. Psa. 50:15.

28. Devotional: Take Heed and Be Quiet

Devotional: Take Heed and Be Quiet
Author: James Smith (1802-1862)

Take heed and be quiet. (Isa. 7:4)

    But they were threatened with an invasion, and appeared to be in imminent danger. Can it be wise, or prudent, to be still ? Whatever God commands is right. We ought to obey God. We are not in the power of any creature. The danger is rather apparent than real. Let us take heed to our tongues, that we do not speak unadvisedly, and so dishonour God. Let us take heed to our tempers, that we do not give way to passion, and so distress ourselves. Let us take heed to our way, that we do not go out of the right path, and so give our enemies an advantage over us. God says, “Be quiet.” Let not fears agitate thee. Let not appearances appal thee. Let not doubts discourage thee. Be calm as the child in its parent's arms. Thy God rules. His hand is in every event, though you may not see it. Thy God is with thee, be was never nearer to thee than just now. Thy God is for thee, pledged by promise and by oath. He will guard thee with his invisible presence. He will keep thee by his power. He will interpose on thy behalf when it is necessary.

When I can trust my all with God,
In trial's fearful hour,—
Bow, all resign'd, beneath the rod,
And bless his sparing power;
A joy springs up amid distress,
A fountain in the wilderness.

27. Devotional: Ye Do Dishonour Me

Devotional: Ye Do Dishonour Me
Author: James Smith (1802-1862)

Ye do dishonour me. (John 8:49)

    OUR LORD ONLY IS WORTHY OF ALL HONOUR. Not to honour Him is a great offence. This is a complaint brought against us by our Lord Jesus Christ: “Ye do dishonour me.” Let us take heed. He has assured us of His love, that He seeks our good, that He will not be wroth with us; we dishonour Him therefore by our fretfulness under trials; by our murmuring when all is not as we wish; by our impatience to be delivered from pain; by our unbelief awaiting the fulfilment of His promises; by our unthankfulness for the many mercies we receive; by employing His favours in Satan's service; by limiting His power or His goodness; by neglecting our duties from want of love or zeal; by boasting of our merits instead of relying on His free grace; and by looking to others, instead of looking only and always to the Lord. Dishonouring Jesus is a great sin; it produces deadness, pain, and misery; let us realize its seriousness, lament it before God, seek repentance for it and forgiveness of it. O let us aim to honour Jesus by gratitude, patience, faith, love, forbearance, penitence, zeal, and by constantly striving for His glory! Let us honour Him in life, in death, and for ever!

Lord, draw my heart from earth away,
And make it only know Thy call;
Speak to my inmost soul, and say,
"I am thy Saviour, God, thine all!"
Nor let me more dishonour Thee,
But Thy devoted servant be.

26. Devotional: Our God Reigns

Devotional: Our God Reigns
Author: Ray C. Stedman (1917-1992)

How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, Your God reigns! (Isaiah 52:7)

    A few years ago I was in England, preaching in some churches in the London area. I spoke one night in a crowded Methodist chapel, where many were singing the chorus, Our God Reigns. I was amused to see in the song sheet from which the congregation was singing that the typist had made an error in the title of the hymn, and it read, Our God Resigns! Many Christians act as if God has resigned. But he has not. Our God reigns! This is what we must declare. We must show it on our faces, and let it be heard in our voices. God will come and the terrible times will end. We (and Israel) will one day hear the welcome summons: Depart, depart, go out from there! Touch no unclean thing! Come out from it and be pure, you who carry the articles of the Lord's house. (Isaiah 52:11)

    That is what is required of Christians today. We are not to go along with all the mistaken ways of the world, chasing illusions, and seeking things that will not satisfy. Rather, we should cleanse ourselves, for the promise is, But you will not leave in haste or go in flight; for the Lord will go before you, the God of Israel will be your rear guard. (Isaiah 52:12)

    We are so often like the Israelites at the Red Sea: the water before us, Pharaoh's army hard on our heels. We do not know where to turn or what to do. But then the word of the Lord comes, Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. (Exodus 14:13). That is the way out. Trust in your Lord. He will open a way through the sea.

    Thank you, Father, that I have nowhere to turn but to you, and you are faithful. I trust that you will go before me and be my rear guard.

Life Application

    Does our life message confidently proclaim that "our God reigns", despite the difficulties we may be facing?

24. Modern Worship Song: Holy Forever

Modern Worship Song: Holy Forever
Author: Chris Tomlin

A thousand generations
Falling down in worship
To sing the song of ages to the Lamb
And all who‵ve gone before us
And all who will believe
Will sing the song of ages to the Lamb

Your name is the highest
Your name is the greatest
Your name stands above them all

All thrones and dominions
All powers and positions
Your name stands above them all
And the angels cry, Holy
All creation cries, Holy
You are lifted high, Holy
Holy forever

If you‵ve been forgiven
And if you‵ve been redeemed
Sing the song forever to the Lamb
If you walk in freedom
And if you bear His name
Sing the song forever to the Lamb
We‵ll sing the song forever and amen

And the angels cry, Holy
All creation cries, Holy
You are lifted high, Holy
Holy forever
Hear Your people sing, Holy
To the King of Kings, Holy
You will always be, Holy
Holy forever

23. Devotional: Pruning the Branches

Devotional: Pruning the Branches
Author: Charles F. Stanley (1932-2023)

John 15:1-6

    The late Francis Schaeffer observed that the average Christian’s objective in life appeared to be personal peace and affluence. Whether we agree with his assessment, we must at least admit that subconsciously, if not overtly, we prefer the pleasant over the painful, the comfortable over the distressful.

    Despite this decidedly normal human disposition, you will stumble badly through the Christian journey if you adopt these longings as your chief aims. Christ’s goal for your life transcends this limited perspective. He has something far more sublime in mind for you—to make you productive in the work of His kingdom. This involves a process Christ termed pruning, a continual trimming of character and habits that are unproductive for your personal growth as a believer, conforming you to the image of God and the standard of His Word.

    Unfortunately, this can be painful at times, even severe when the pruning lops off sensitive areas. But whatever God sees as detrimental to your fruitfulness and well-being, He will seek to sever. The tools of Providence may be sharp, but they are held by loving hands.

    Perhaps you can identify an area that God’s Spirit has surfaced as deleterious to your spiritual health. Cooperate with the Husbandman. Though it may be trying for a time, God’s goal is to grow you into the image of Christ. In this kind of pain, there is godly gain.

    Dear Lord, conform me to the image of Your Son and the standard of Your Word. Prune out everything that is detrimental to my fruitfulness and well-being.

22. Devotional: God's Rod

Devotional: God's Rod
Author: C. H. Spurgeon (1834-1892)

“O Lord of hosts, how long wilt thou not have mercy upon Jerusalem? ... And the Lord answered the angel ... with good words and comfortable words. (Zechariah 1:12,13)

    What a sweet answer to an anxious enquiry! This night let us rejoice in it. O Zion, there are good things in store for thee; thy time of travail shall soon be over; thy children shall be brought forth; thy captivity shall end. Bear patiently the rod for a season, and under the darkness still trust in God, for his love burneth towards thee. God loves the church with a love too deep for human imagination: he loves her with all his infinite heart. Therefore let her sons be of good courage; she cannot be far from prosperity to whom God speaketh “good words and comfortable words.” What these comfortable words are the prophet goes on to tell us: “I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy.” The Lord loves his church so much that he cannot bear that she should go astray to others; and when she has done so, he cannot endure that she should suffer too much or too heavily. He will not have his enemies afflict her: he is displeased with them because they increase her misery. When God seems most to leave his church, his heart is warm towards her. History shows that whenever God uses a rod to chasten his servants, he always breaks it afterwards, as if he loathed the rod which gave his children pain. “Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him.” God hath not forgotten us because he smites—his blows are no evidences of want of love. If this is true of his church collectively, it is of necessity true also of each individual member. You may fear that the Lord has passed you by, but it is not so: he who counts the stars, and calls them by their names, is in no danger of forgetting his own children. He knows your case as thoroughly as if you were the only creature he ever made, or the only saint he ever loved. Approach him and be at peace.

21. Hymn: Let There Be Hope Today, Lord

Hymn: Let There Be Hope Today, Lord
Author: B. Porter

1. Let there be hope today, Lord,
    Hope as I watch and pray, Lord,
    Hope of a sunlit way, Lord,
    In the dark day give hope!

2. Hope when the waves roll high, Lord,
    Hope when the winds sweep by, Lord,
    Hope through a storm-rent sky, Lord,
    Into my heart send hope!

3. Hope that the clouds may clear, Lord,
    Hope that dispels each fear, Lord,
    Hope because Thou art near, Lord,
    So let me wait in hope!

4. “In hope against hope,” I wait, Lord,
    Faced by some fast-barred gate, Lord,
    Hope never says “Too late,” Lord,
    Therefore in Thee I hope!

5. Hope though the night be long, Lord,
    Hope of a glowing dawn, Lord,
    Morning must break in song, Lord,
    For we are “saved by hope.”

20. Devotional: Jehovah-Rophi

Devotional: Jehovah-Rophi
Author: James Smith (1802-1862)

I am the Lord who heals you! (Exodus 15:26)

    In the seasons of sickness, we are too prone to look too much to the means, and place too great a dependence upon them. But the believer should view the Lord not only as the physician of the soul — but also of the body. Means should be used — but the Lord only should be looked up to as the Healer. When King Asa was diseased, he did not seek the Lord — but the physicians; and the Lord took it as an insult offered to His divine majesty. 2 Chronicles 16:12.

    All medicines have their healing qualities from our God, and it befits us to look up to Him for His blessing upon all that we take. We never can trust God for too much, unless we despise the means which He usually blesses. When we look to Him, call upon Him, and place confidence in Him — we honor Him. His direction is, "Trust in Him at all times; pour out your heart before Him! God is a refuge for us." He loves to be acknowledged, consulted, and trusted.

    He is your Healer, believer; He knows perfectly the nature of your illness, the remedies that are necessary — and waits to be called in to your relief. Call on Him first; look to Him principally; and give Him praise for intervals of ease, and all favorable symptoms. Look upon the physician and surgeon as His servants, and beseech Him to direct them. They are at best but feeble instruments, broken cisterns, or dry wells — without Him. If He blesses — their prescriptions are effectual; if He withholds — their endeavors are vain. How many are trusting to a great name, a skillful man, rather than trusting to the Lord; but He has said, "See now that I Myself am He! There is no god besides Me. I put to death — and I bring to life, I have wounded — and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand!" Deuteronomy 32:39. "I will heal you, and I will bring you health and cure."

    Bodily sickness is often intended to be medicine for the soul. The Lord designs by it . . .
to cleanse us from some idols,
to purge away our inordinate attachment to temporal things,
and bring us nearer to Himself.

    The cares of the world have too much of our hearts, and occupy too much of our time; self-examination is neglected; secret prayer is shortened; and we can find but little time for any spiritual exercises. What base ingratitude — and yet how common! What folly — and yet how general! How loudly it calls for God's rod! How deeply it grieves a Father's love! Then the Lord comes and throws us on a bed of sickness, or confines us from our worldly employments — that we may find time for those things which involve His glory, and our best interests.

    Have you, Christian, ever complained that you had not time to attend to things of a spiritual character? If so, look upon your present sickness as a visitation from the Lord to give you a little time for these employments. Make the most of these precious hours — now sow to the Spirit. Then, if spared to go back again into your worldly employments — you will be better prepared to engage in them. Or if called to an eternal world, you will receive life everlasting. Seek pardon — as well as healing; you deeply need it, and it is far more important than the return of health. But both shall be given if consistent with the Lord's glory — which above all things you should seek and desire. And if pardon is enjoyed, and health once more returns — you should cheerfully sing:

O bless the Lord, my soul;
Nor let His mercies lie
Forgotten in unthankfulness,
Or without praises die.

'Tis He forgives your sins,
'Tis He relieves your pain,
'Tis He who heals your sicknesses,
And makes you young again!

19. Devotional: The Lord Trieth the Righteous

Devotional: The Lord Trieth the Righteous
Author: James Smith (1802-1862)

The Lord trieth the righteous. (Psalm 11:5)

    “THE LORD’S THRONE IS IN HEAVEN.” He sees all and knows all. He gives grace to the righteous, and where the Lord gives grace, He always tries it; therefore His own people must expect to pass through the fire. He will try our faith, of what sort it is; our love, of what strength it is. He will also try our patience and our constancy. Let us not therefore be surprised at trials, nor let us be discouraged by them; for He tries out of pure love, with the best design, according to a wise rule, and at the fittest season. He considers our frame, our circumstances, and our foes; He does nothing rashly or unkindly. He would not put us to pain if we did not need it; trials are preservatives or restoratives; they keep us from evil, or bring us out of evil into which we have fallen. Trials then are from the Lord: His wisdom selects, His love appoints, and His providence brings them about. If you ask, "Why, Lord, am I tried thus?" the answer is, "To humble thee, and to prove thee, and to do thee good at thy latter end." Receive every trial as from God, go to Him for strength to bear it, grace to sanctify it, and deliverance from it; and so all will be well. It is not for His pleasure, but for our profit, that we are so tried.

Often the clouds of deepest woe,
A sweet love message bear;
Dark though they seem, we cannot find
A frown of anger there.

17. Devotional: Take No Thought for the Morrow

Devotional: Take No Thought for the Morrow
Author: James Smith (1802-1862)

Take... no thought for the morrow. (Matthew 6:34)

    “YE ARE OF MORE VALUE THAN MANY SPARROWS.” Anxious Christians, give ear to our Lord’s words. If He cares for sparrows, will He not care for you? Let no anxious, perplexing, distressing thoughts flood your mind. You know not that you shall live even until tomorrow, for the Lord may take you home tonight. But if you do, the Lord will be as thoughtful of you, as kind to you, and as watchful of you, as He has always been. There is daily grace as well as daily bread. You cannot be fatherless and you will not be neglected. Whatever your circumstances may be, your Father knows them. He has provided for them and He will bring you through, to His own great glory. Let the peace of God rule in your heart. Stay yourself upon the word of the Lord. Your loving Saviour wishes you to be free from anxiety, to wait upon Him without distraction, to honour Him by the exercise of calm, patient, believing trust. Go to rest this night, obeying your Redeemer's word, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness; and all temporal things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow; for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof." When you awake in the morning your God will still be with you, as He promised, to lead you ever onward unto the perfect day.

By day by night, at home abroad,
Still I am guarded by my God:
By His unfailing bounty fed,
By His unerring counsel led.

16. Devotional: He Careth For You

Devotional: He Careth For You
Author: James Smith (1802-1862)

He careth for you. (1 Peter 5:7)

    GOD IS THE GOD OF ALL GRACE. He has called us to eternal glory by Jesus our Lord. He continues to care for us. He knows all His people, their persons, wants, and trials. He thinketh upon them to benefit, to deliver and supply them. He keeps His eye upon them in all places, at all times, and under all circumstances. He has them in His hand, and will not loose His hold. He looks upon them always as His own, the objects of His love, the purchase of His blood, the temples of His Spirit. They are precious in His sight. He knows they are weak, fearful, and have many enemies. He teaches them to cast themselves and all their cares upon Him. He has given them His word that He will care for them. It is a Father's care which He exercises. It is wise, holy, tender, and constant; therefore all will be well, only trust. Believe that He cares for you this day; commit all your concerns to Him in the faith of this: leave them with Him, persuaded that He will manage all things well by His infinite wisdom, and bring all to a good conclusion by His omnipotent power. Cast all your cares upon Him for He careth for you. "Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and He shall sustain thee; He will never suffer the righteous to be moved."

"Cast," He says, "on me thy care,
‘Tis enough that I am nigh;
I will all thy burdens bear,
I will all thy wants supply."

15. Devotional: Is the Lord's Hand Waxed Short?

Devotional: Is the Lord's Hand Waxed Short?
Author: James Smith (1802-1862)

 "Is the Lord's hand waxed short?" Numbers 11:23

    WE MUST NEVER TEMPT THE LORD. The Israelites did that in the wilderness and kindled the wrath of the Lord. Be not faithless like them: only trust and not doubt. He has all power: is anything too hard for the Lord? Why then are we cast down? Because we do not believe His word, depend simply on His faithfulness, and expect all we need from His hand. He was displeased with Moses when he questioned His power, and He is displeased with us when we doubt His love, distrust His providence, or ask, "How can this thing be?" Whatever may be your difficulty, trial, or want, plead with the Lord, and confidently expect deliverance; and if any temptation arises to weaken your faith, rouse your fears, or disturb your tranquility, meet it with this question, "Is the Lord's hand waxed short?" Beloved, look not to the hand of man, but simply look to the hand of God; man may disappoint you, God will not. He is faithful that promised. He is a God at hand. He will be near you throughout this day; His hand is able and ready to help you; therefore trust, and be not afraid.

In heaven, and earth, and air, and seas,
He executes His firm decrees;
And by His saints it stands confessed,
That what He does is ever best;
Then on His powerful arm rely,
And He will bring salvation nigh.

14. Hymn: A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

Hymn: A Mighty Fortress Is Our God
Author: Martin Luther (1483-1546)

1. A mighty fortress is our God,
    A bulwark never failing;
    Our helper He amid the flood
    Of mortal ills prevailing.
    For still our ancient foe
    Doth seek to work us woe −
    His craft and pow’r are great,
    And, armed with cruel hate,
    On earth is not his equal.

2. Did we in our own strength confide,
    Our striving would be losing,
    Were not the right Man on our side,
    The man of God’s own choosing.
    Dost ask who that may be?
    Christ Jesus, it is He −
    Lord Sabaoth His Name,
    From age to age the same,
    And He must win the battle.

3. And though this world, with devils filled,
    Should threaten to undo us,
    We will not fear, for God hath willed
    His truth to triumph thru us.
    The prince of darkness grim,
    We tremble not for him −
    His rage we can endure,
    For lo, his doom is sure:
    One little word shall fell him.

4. That word above all earthly pow’rs,
    No thanks to them, abideth;
    The Spirit and the gifts are ours
    Thru Him who with us sideth.
    Let goods and kindred go,
    This mortal life also −
    The body they may kill:
    God’s truth abideth still:
    His kingdom is forever.

13. Devotional: Therefore Trust Thou In Him

Devotional: Therefore Trust Thou In Him
Author: James Smith (1802-1862)

Therefore trust thou in Him. (Job 35:14)

    "SOME TRUST IN CHARIOTS, AND SOME IN HORSES." But we trust in God our Saviour. Beloved in Christ our Lord, forget not that thy times are in His hands, that thy name is in His book of life, that He has promised to be thy God, and that He is faithful to His word. Every blessing we need is promised; every promise is firm and sure, therefore trust thou in Him. Thy heart may fail thee, thy way may perplex thee, thy fears may overcome thee, thy foes may insult thee; but thy way is not hid from the Lord; therefore trust thou in Him. His word is true from the beginning: His people in every age have proved it so, its verity is its crown; therefore you may trust it firmly, fearlessly, and constantly: and His faithful word shall calm thy fears, strengthen thy hopes, sweeten thy comforts, and lead thee to cheerful, filial obedience. His hand may seem to go against thee, but His heart beats with unutterable love toward thee; He may appear to be armed with a sword to destory thee; but even then you should say with Job, "Though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him" and you will find, that instead of destroying, His sword is for your defence. He will honour your confidence, and bring you out into a wealthy place. Only trust thou in Him.

Thy ways, O Lord, with wise design,
Are framed upon Thy throne above;
And every dark and gloomy line
Meets in the centre of Thy love;
Therefore I trust in Thee alone,
And humbly pray, "Thy will be done."

12. Devotional: Thou Hast Tried Me

Devotional: Thou Hast Tried Me
Author: James Smith (1802-1862)

Thou hast tried me. (Psalm 17:3)

    DAVID HAD TASTED THE GOODNESS OF GOD. Not only did He visit, uphold, and keep, but He also tried and searched the heart. In the process, discipline had been exercised. The Lord trieth the righteous, and his trials discover, strengthen, and improve his character. His fire is in Zion and His furnace in Jerusalem; there He tries His people. Every trial is necessary for our good; it is ordained by eternal love; and is continued just as long as required, but not one moment longer. Every saint needs trials and every saint is tried. If the Lord intends to make us holy He will put us through the fire. Every time we pray for holiness, we pray for trials; trials enhance the value of the promises, endear the throne of grace, render the law of God profitable, and make the Saviour exceedingly precious. In trials we learn to read our own hearts, see the vanity of the world, look more closely to our evidences, humble ourselves before our God, and look with a longing eye to the end of our course. The tried Christian is likely to be a mature and stable Christian; few who walk a smooth path are either remarkably spiritual or exceptionally useful for God. Trials, like the frosts of winter, prepare our hearts to receive the good seed of the word in the spring, and then we bring forth fruit for the Lord. "When He hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold."

Brought into the fire, Thy wonderful power,
Unburnt we admire, unhurt we adore;
Brought thro' our temptation, we shortly shall prove
Thy gracious salvation, Thy amazing love.
